Current Conditions:
The Upper Madison River is only open from Mac to Ennis but is fishing well. The Upper is a colder fishery and seems to always lag behind the other rivers in the early spring. The upper has been fishing above average when clarity is good but mostly on nymphs. Some big trout are being caught on stonefly nymphs, dead drifted streamers and san juan worms. Trailing a baetis nymph can also produce. The water is currently on the rise but should still be fishable. The general opener is May 19th and the upper river below the Slide should be outstanding then.

The Month Ahead:
The Upper Madison is a great run off fishery as long as you aren't too far below the West Fork at Lyons bridge. Usually the mud takes a few miles to mix in and you can have good fishing all the way to Windy after the opener on May 19th. Between the lakes will be a great option too when it opens. The river in the Park and its tributary the Firehole will also be a great bet after Memorial day Saturday when they open.

Long Term Fishing Forecast:
The Madison drainage is hovering just below average for snow pack (around 90%) so we should be in great shape for the 2012 season. Run off on the upper river should end around the 3rd week of June unless we receive heavy late spring moisture. Fishing above the West Fork will remain good even during the peak of run off.
