Montana fly fishing is synonomous with large rivers and mountain streams, but it is also home to some of the best stillater fishing in the world. What makes our lakes so terrific is the callibaetis hatch. The callibaetis mayfly hatches throughout the summer producing awesome site fishing to very large trout. When the hatch gets really thick, the trout go into such a feeding frenzy that the swim around just below the surface "gulping" mayflies by the dozens. Ennis Lake Ennis lake is an impoundment of the Madison River and is great option when fly fishing near Bozeman and Ennis. This medium sized lake is full of weedbeds and shallow flats. Often we get out of the boat to wade fish to large trout working weed beds during the hatch. Trout in Ennis lake average between 15-22" with larger fish present. Hebgen Lake Hebgen Lake is located just outside of Yellowstone Park. It is a large reservoir that is home to a fantastic callibaetis hatch that brings monster trout to the surface. Hebgen is the holy land for gulper fishing. Harrison Lake Harrison lake doesn't produce much of a callibaetis hatch so the sight fishing is marginal. It does produce a unique strain of rainbows that are large and very hard fighting making the lake popular with stillwater junkies. |
