Located in the Shields River valley, the Double T River Ranch offers incredibly diverse and productive fishing options in every direction from the ranch. The ranch is also ideally located to fish many of our exclusive private waters in the area.
Shields River: The Shields is a small wade fishing stream that begins in the Crazy Mountains and flows past the small towns of Wilsall and Clyde Park along Highway 89. The headwaters of the Shields harbors a healthy population of native cutthroat trout along with some wild brook trout. The lower reaches of the river hold a few nice cutthroat along with browns and rainbows. Spring fishing on the Shields can be very good when the river is not off color. After runoff there is often good attractor dry fly fishing. Late summer can produce good terrestrial fishing but on poor snow years the Shields can get dewatered quickly in its lower reaches.
Yellowstone River - 10 minutes from the lodge gets you to the longest free flowing river in the lower 48 and one of North America's most productive wild trout fisheries. The "Stone" offers over 200 miles of high quality trout waters that include a variety of fish species and water characteristics. The style of fishing on the Yellowstone is classic western big water angling with the most productive techniques often involving big streamers and large foam attractor dry flies. The size of the river lends itself to float fishing from rafts and drift boats.
Below the 300 foot water fall at the Natural Bridge the Boulder enters big ranch country but doesn't loose its fast pocket water nature. Browns and rainbows dominate hear and dry fly fishing remains our favorite technique. Larger trout in the 16-18" range are common and fish over 20" are regularly caught on the lower floats near the Yellowstone. This water is often floated in the summer using our skilled guides and customized rafts with fishing frames, seats and anchor systems.
The stillwater is the sister river of the main boulder and is found one river valley to the east. It is slightly larger in volume but offers similar fast action pocket water with great dry fly fishing. It is a long drive from the major guide centers of Bozeman and Livingston which helps keep it off the radar of many of the areas guides. At higher flows we float the Stillwater in rafts and at lower flows it is best wade fished.
Livingston Spring Creeks
For anglers that wan't to test their skill on some of the most prolific and technical waters in the world we can visit the famous spring creeks near Livingston (about an hour drive) including DePuy, Nelson and Armstrong. These wade fishing streams are born from underground springs and are infested with aquatic insects and other macroinvertebrates that result in an amazing density of trout. Hatches on the creeks are spectacular but expect to work hard to fool the often highly selective trout.
